Understanding the Frameworks
🧠 The Upward Spiral (Neuroscience)
Author: Alex Korb, PhD
Foundation: Neuroscience and brain plasticity
Key Principle: Depression arises from the tuning of brain circuits related to thinking, feeling, habits, and rewards. These circuits can be modified through thoughts and actions.
Focus Areas:
- Brain circuit modification
- Dopamine and serotonin signaling
- Prefrontal cortex functioning
- Habit formation and reward systems
- Body-brain connection
🎯 Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Authors: Timothy Gordon, MSW, RSW and Jessica Borushok, PhD
Foundation: Psychological flexibility through acceptance and mindfulness
Key Principle: Psychological health comes from accepting difficult thoughts and feelings while committing to values-based action.
Core Processes:
- Being Present (contact with the present moment)
- Defusion (seeing thoughts as thoughts)
- Values and Committed Action
- Self as Context (flexible perspective)
- Acceptance (willingness to experience)
❤️ Self-Compassion
Authors: Chris Willard, PsyD, Mitch Abblett, PhD, and Tim Desmond, LMFT
Foundation: Self-compassion research and mindfulness practice
Key Principle: Treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a good friend during difficult times.
Core Components:
- Self-Kindness: Being warm toward yourself vs. self-judgment
- Common Humanity: Recognizing shared human experience vs. isolation
- Mindfulness: Balanced awareness vs. over-identification
🌈 Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Author: Lane Pederson, Psy.D., LP, DBTC (based on Marsha Linehan's work)
Foundation: Balancing acceptance and change through dialectical thinking
Key Principle: Finding synthesis between opposites - accepting reality while working toward change.
Four Core Modules:
- Mindfulness: Present moment awareness and wise mind
- Distress Tolerance: Surviving crisis without making things worse
- Emotion Regulation: Understanding and managing emotions
- Interpersonal Effectiveness: Maintaining relationships while respecting self
